Within nature conservation, the emphasis is always on biodiversity. Species diversity is the measure of successful nature policy. However, Tom Bade believes that another measure should be added to this: biomassality. This involves huge quantities of a certain species. In fact, biomassality is actually more important. Because first the biomassality disappears and only then the biodiversity. In pristine ecosystems, biomassality is the norm. Whether it’s the wildebeest of the Serengeti, the king penguins in South Georgia or the schools of fish in the oceans, biomassality is everywhere and needs to be protected and stimulated.
